House Fire In Cheddleton Sparks Safety Warning

Firefighters are warning people to store items in their lofts safely after a blaze broke out at a semi-detached property in Cheddleton in Staffrdshire, the fire was caused by a spotlight in the hall ceiling.

“We would urge people to think very carefully about where they position items in their loft to avoid this type of incident occurring. Combustible materials such as clothing and papers should always be kept well away from light fittings.”

Fire Investigation Officer Brian Griffiths

The incident was caused when a spotlight in the hall ceiling, backing onto the loft floor, overheated and set fire to Christmas decorations that had been placed on top.

Two appliances from Leek, one from Longton and the Aerial Ladder Platform from Longton attended the incident on Boucher Road at 8.10am today.

The fire was well established in the roof void of one semi-detached property and had spread to the neighbouring house, although damage to the second property was minimal.

Firefighters wore four breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets to tackle the blaze before leaving the scene at 12.40pm.

Fire Investigation Officer Brian Griffiths said: “The damage was contained to the loft of the affected property and luckily did not have a major impact on the house next door. It was an accidental ignition caused by the light fitting heating up and setting fire to a Christmas tree and festive decorations which are highly flammable.

“We would urge people to think very carefully about where they position items in their loft to avoid this type of incident occurring. Combustible materials such as clothing and papers should always be kept well away from light fittings.”
